How to add an AI chatbot to your website in 5 minutes
No developer, no code beyond one copy-paste line. The exact steps: create a bot, point it at your website, test it against your own content, and go live — free plan, no card.
This is the shortest post on this blog, because the process is genuinely short. Below is the exact flow a new Zedinga user goes through — not an idealized marketing version. I know, because we watch this funnel and fix every step where someone gets stuck.
One honest note before the clock starts: "5 minutes" covers a typical small-business site. The setup wizard indexes your first batch of pages to get you live fast; if you want hundreds of pages in the bot's knowledge, you add a full-site crawl afterwards from the Knowledge tab — and you can test and go live with the first pages while embedding finishes.
Step 1: Name your bot and pick its language (1 minute)
Sign up free — no credit card — and the setup wizard starts. You give the bot a name, pick its primary language (it will still auto-detect and answer visitors in 12 languages), and optionally start from an industry template if you want pre-written question-and-answer pairs for your sector.
Step 2: Point it at your website (2 minutes)
Type your website address. The wizard discovers your pages, picks the most useful ones to start with, and indexes them — you'll see each page's status as it processes. This is where the bot's knowledge comes from: your own content, nothing else. It doesn't get smarter than your website, and that's by design — a bot that "knows" things you never wrote is a bot that makes things up.
No website, or a site that's mostly images? The wizard has a path for that too: write a starter question-and-answer pair by hand, and add as many more as you like from the Knowledge tab.
Step 3: Try it before your visitors do (1 minute)
The wizard's "Try Your Bot" step opens a real chat with your just-indexed content and suggests questions generated from your own pages — click one and watch the answer come back with source links. This is the moment to ask the hard ones: your prices, your opening hours, your refund policy.
Ask it something your website doesn't answer, too. The right response is an honest "I don't know" plus a handover to your contact channels — not an invented answer. If you'd rather it never improvise at all, strict grounding is a per-bot toggle. (Why we built it that way is a longer story.)
Step 4: One line of code, and you're live (1 minute)
The final step gives you a single script line to paste before </body> on your site:
<script async src="https://zedinga.ai/widget.js" data-bot-id="YOUR_BOT_ID"></script>
Copy-paste it into your theme — or open the bot's Embed tab, which has a send-to-developer button that emails the instructions to whoever manages your site, and an install checker that confirms the widget is answering on your domain. On Shopify the widget installs itself when you connect your store — no theme editing at all.
That's the whole thing. WordPress, Wix, Webflow, Shopify, hand-written HTML — anywhere you can paste one line, the bot runs, with your colors and your welcome message once you customize it.
What to do in minute six
The bot is live, but "live" isn't "done" — the difference between a decoration and a support channel is what you feed it:
- Check the unanswered questions list after the first few days. Every question the bot couldn't answer is logged for you — each one is a gap in your website's content that your human inbox was silently absorbing.
- Add the answers as Q&A pairs. Two minutes each, and the bot handles that question forever after.
- Turn on the channels you need. Lead capture, human handoff to your team's inbox, WhatsApp — see what each plan includes.
You can sanity-check all of this against bots that are already in production — three of them run on real businesses right now. Then start free and put yours live before your next customer question arrives.
